The Oregon Trail was the only way for emigrants to get to Oregon, without using boats. The terrain along the way was treacherous. After the Corps of Discovery, with Lewis and Clark, hunters, also known as mountain men, moved west to trap animals for their fur. Soon after the mountain men, missionaries followed them. The mountain men charged the missionaries for directions. As they sent letters back to the East about the rich and fertile soil, Oregon fever swept through the U.S.
People traveled on the Oregon Trail for many reasons. For example some people believed in the idea of Manifest Destiny, meaning the God given right to expand westward. Another one of those reasons was for financial purposes. Two of the bigger reasons was the lack of land which caused overpopulation and even for the fun of adventure.
There were many hardships and challenges along the way on the Orgon Trail. One of the bigger hardships of the journey was death of relatives due to diseases, wildlife, Native American attacks, ect. A challenge faced by almost all travelers was to balance out the use of their money along the Oregon Trail. These hardships were fatal, but not as much as the problem of reaching and passing the mountains before winter began.
The Oregon Trail helped to shape up the growing and spreading of the United States. It helped to move the population westward from the overpopulated East. If it was not for the Oregon Trail, many of the western states would not be or even look like they do today. It also helped the spread of many religious beliefs. The Oregon Trail was one of the greatest influences in American history.
